Baby Colic -- Finding Relief

Author: Ellery Goldsmith

Having a baby in the house can be a wonderful experience. For many new parents, however, that experience turns somewhat sour whenever a baby starts to deal with colic. It might just start with a little bit of crying every now and again but it quickly turns into something much worse. A colicky baby is basically defined as a newborn that cries more than three hours a day, every day, for more than three weeks. If you have to deal with a baby with colic, you understand how stressful this situation can be. Baby colic is one of the most trying times that a parent of a newborn can possibly go through.

A problem that all parents with a colicky baby have is that there really is no way to treat it. You will notice that your baby cries, almost as if it is in pain, the entire time it is experiencing a bout with colic. Many times, these episodes will happen about the same time every day. Researchers have been trying to figure out what causes colic but there is no known explanation for the problem. The only thing that they have discovered is that children with a mother that smokes during pregnancy, or soon after birth, has twice the chance of developing colic.

There are some things that you can try to do to treat the baby colic, which may work for you. Some people have found success in rocking or singing to their child gently. Many also find that by snuggling the child close into your body, it eases their crying to a certain extent. I'm sure you will agree that at this point anything is worth trying.

The good thing about baby colic is that it does not last forever. By three months of age, your newborn child will be back to his or her smiling, bubbly self again. One of the best things that you can do if you have a colicky baby is to get away from the situation every once in awhile. Enlist the help of family members, friends or babysitters just to get a little bit of a break so that you can deal with the situation with a smile.
