Do I really need to take a birth class?

By Rosemary E. King

More often than not, women don't know if a birth or pregnancy class is right for them.  They wonder if their family and friends are support enough, especially since some seem expensive.  The choice to take a birth class should be a decision you and your partner make together.  If you’re on your own, consider at least having someone you trust by your side to be your advocate in the hospital, or home.   This may or may not include hiring a doula to assist you.

Birthing classes are a great tool for some women and a pain in the neck for others.  Finding the right class is what will make your experience pleasant verses annoyance.   Your doctor, or midwife will be able to give you information on local classes, it is your job to seek out the one that fits your birthing plan and philosophy.  If you want to attend a class on Lamaze, then seek out a specialist that focuses on this type of birth.  If you have no preference, a general class, usually held at most hospitals, might be better suited for you.

Whatever class you choose, you should be able to meet and mingle with other expectant mommies.   Sharing experiences and being able to talk about your pregnancy should also be a factor in choosing a class.

Money concerns are also a key factor.  If it’s too expensive to sign up, ask if they provide a discount or other options for you.  Don’t take a class if you know you can’t afford it.  You can still learn a lot just by researching and talking with other women.  The class is mostly to ease you into birth and provide answers to your questions, while guiding you on what to expect in the delivery room.

Overall, don’t feel pressured to sign up for a birthing class if you’re uninterested or feel that it won’t be a good match for you and your beliefs.  Nothing compares to researching and reading books on your own to provide answers for you.  Your local library has a wealth of information on birth and it’s free!  Don’t forget to enlist the wisdom of your mom or other friends and family!  They’re more than willing to help!  And if that doesn’t work, consider starting an expectant mommy group in your area just to meet with other new moms and talk about the joys and tribulations of pregnancy!
