Finding the Right Birth Provider
by Rosemary E. King
This is no easy question, for any woman. The answers to these questions will help you decide which type of birth provider(s) will be best for you and your unborn child.
To find the best person to oversee your pregnancy is vital for your health and your unborn child’s health. If at any time you’re unsatisfied with your decision, don’t feel guilty for switching providers. There’s no greater stress than not being able to discuss your problems and concerns with your provider.
Here are some questions to ask when looking for the right provider:
· What kind of birth are you looking for? If you want to do a home birth, then a midwife would be your best option. If you want a birth in a hospital because you want the pain medications, then an OB may be the option for you. Keep in mind, that OB’s may have a midwife on staff and therefore, you can have the option of a birthing center birth. Similar to a hospital, birth centers generally have more “homey” options like water relaxation or water birth. The American Association of Birth Centers, is a great online resource to check out about the alternative for childbirth, if you want the convenience of a homey-type birth while still in a somewhat hospital setting.
· What type of personality am I looking for? Some women want a take charge person taking care of her and her unborn, others want someone who will give her more freedom to make decisions. Whatever your choice, make sure you can get along well with your provider.
· Does my insurance cover this provider? Don’t let this little detail get away from you! Even if your insurance only covers a few providers, still interview them and seek out the best one for you!
· What is their philosophy on childbirth? Make sure that their philosophy models their practice. Ask about the questions about the tests that they reccommend, ultrasounds that they provide, who they go to if a problem arises, and how they handle emergencies during the pregnancy and birth. Take note of anyone who pushes a c-section for any emergency. Likewise, if you’ve had a c-section and want a VBAC, make sure first that your insurance covers this and that the provider you choose will do everything possible to make this possiblity for you.
Once you have narrowed your search down to 2-4 providers, call their office and speak with the nurse. Ask to make an appointment to interview the provider. Most places are happy to oblige. From there you can choose the one you like best.
One more thing to keep in mind:
If you’re having problems with the staff, or front desk workers, don’t be afraid to mention this to the provider. Many times I’ve had staff issues and they were all resolved by talking to my doctor. Don’t let poor staff manners keep you from enjoying your pregnancy.
